Free Top Level Domain Names!
Now i cant speak for you, but i can speak for myself. When it comes to domains ill do anything and everything to avoid paying a single penny for one. Why? Who knows. I’m cheap. So now are you ready to get your own
little piece of internet identity free as well?
Good. Throughout my countless and countless web searches i have discovered a pretty good collection of sites that offer free tld (top level domains, such as .com, .net, .org, ect) and many free subdomains (yourwebsite.xx.xx). These sites actually deliver what they say they do unlike other websites who promise a free domain and then throw in all these extra purchases you have to make in order to receive it.
The first website on my list is http://domainlagoon.com. In order to receive your free domain you do in fact have to fill out a couple surveys and offers. Every offer has a certain “point” value and once you accumulate 10 points you can request your free domain. The whole process took me about one hour, that was filling out the surveys, getting the points, and requesting the prize. Once you receive your domain you have FULL control over it.
The next site is http://myfreetld.com. This site is pretty much the same as DomainLagoon. Fill out offers, get points, redeem said points for a Godaddy.com gift card, use gift card to register domain.
Now if you don’t feel like filling out offers you can try http://dot.tk. This site offers you a free domain in the form of yourname.tk. All you have to do is visit the site, enter your desired name, and BAM. All done.
As for free subdomains you can go to http://afraid.org. The site offers a HUGE list of subdomains to choose from, some of my favorites are .us.to and .uk.to. just visit the site, register, and make as many domains as your little heart desires!
Last but not least we have http://co.cc. They offer domains in the form of yourname.co.cc. There are a few other websites like co.cc that offer pretty much the same thing except for tweaks here and there. The sites include

Well there ya have it folks. If you cant find a domain or subdomain from one of these sites that fits what your looking for you might try Webs #1 stop for all free webmaster needs, other than that you may as well stop looking because theres nothing out there better.
Well of course theres always going out and buying one… But like i said before, im cheap! Im going to go ahead and assume your cheap as well because why else would you be reading this article?

What Is Your Domain Name Really Worth?
Great question. How does a domain name affect your Search Engine rankings? What actually contributes to the value of a domain name? Let’s take a look.
1. Type-in Traffic
Years ago, many people didn’t understand the difference between the URL (Uniform Resource Locater) or address of the actual website and the search window in Google. One goes directly to a particular website, like the address of a house. The other is an actual search. So people would just type in what they were looking for in the *address* field…i.e. “new shoes”. This is called type-in traffic.
This meant that if you were lucky enough to buy a domain like “newshoes.com” for around $7.00 per year, you would automatically receive a respectable amount of traffic to that domain…type-in traffic. This would make the domain valuable, as it could be parked or used for an ecommerce shoe store…traffic equals money.
It is 2010 now, people are more savvy. More people use the search window and they know that it is a search window. So, type-in traffic has diminished, not to mention that everyone is hip to domain ownership, any ones with any value have been bought up. Goddaddy.com even buys domains they feel will have high traffic and resells them to you and me at a premium price, this is a premium domain. By the way, they will quickly settle for 70% of the asking price if asked. Type-in traffic isn’t what it used to be and domains are more expensive.
Does it matter?
The short answer is “not much”. Content is still king. Google works very hard to return relevant, high-quality results for it visitors. Look at Facebook.com, Google.com, yahoo.com, the domain can be anything. Can it help? Absolutely. If your domain contains your keywords you will get a little more love from Google and the search engines, but will it make or break your website? No. Shorter is better, descriptive is better. I recommend considering buying a premium domain, it is a good start.
Domain name traffic
Listen, I have owned a lot of domains, upwards of 450 at one point. I have purchased premium domains, acted as a domain broker for my clients, parked domains at different domain parking services like sedo.com, parked.com and many others. I have struggled to optimize over 150 landing pages in an effort to make a passive income…all with not much success, except learning a lot about how domains work.
Look, there are many ways to measure traffic. All of my websites are built on a CMS and it has it’s own traffic stats. Well, I also use Google Analytics on all my sites. When I compare the numbers from both, they are different. There is no way to tell who is linking to your site, conclusively. There is no way to be 100% accurate on where the traffic is coming from. I have been a victim of a scam where you “purchase traffic”. The company explained that they had high-traffic websites…that were relevant…that you would get links from and traffic to your site. I found that that was not the case. Technically, I got traffic, but who knows where it came from. With all the traffic, I got not new customers and a very high bounce rate. The bottom line is: Don’t believe traffic reports, unless you are using Google Analytics and have personal access to the live Google Analytics account.
Old domains
One cool thing you can do is to check out archive.org . This site will let you see what a website looked like years ago. It will show you if there was a website associated with the domain you are looking at. If you want to see what your competitor’s site looked like back in ‘08 you can check it out. With old domains, you want to be careful. You want to know what kind of site it was, you don’t want to do a lot of back paddling in the first few months of your new domain/website ownership. Type in “link: yournewdomainname.com” in Google, and it will show you how many links point to that domain, same thing using Yahoo!, I use both.
Social Media
With the current trend of savvy marketers using Facebook and YouTube.com as main forefronts on their marketing campaigns, this gives domain names even less value. It actually reduces the importance of the brands entire website. Toyota recently closed a national ad by giving the address of their YouTube.com channel, not their website address. This direction both diludes and broadens the company’s marketing penetration, and for sure minimizes the impact of the domain on their website, as it would for any company.

Altough there is no exact formula to appraise a domain, there are a group of things to consider before putting a value to a domain. TLD Extension
TLD or Top-Level Domain is the ending extension attached to a domain such as . com, . net or . org. The . com extension is considered the most sought after even though there are other TLD’s that are gaining huge popularity and acceptance. CC’s or Country Codes are also seeing their fair share of registrations.
Name Length
Now that all the 2, 3 and 4 letter . com’s have been registered, the letter count on a domain is fast becoming a huge factor in a domain’s worth. The desire for a short domain is at an all time high and values are steadily climbing due to the limited supply of shorter length domains. Seems shorter names are easier to remember and with that a value increase.
Characters, Numbers and Hyphens
Hyphens integrated between letters are often viewed as separators between keywords. Although there is much dispute whether or not the hyphens negatively impact a domain’s search engine optimization, there is considerable preference that a domain not include anything extra in it’s name. Number digits are beginning to see their popularity rise and can be included with relevant keywords or letters to make a great domain.
Keyword Popularity
Marketable search terms and keyword popularity are extremely relevant in appraising a domain name. The frequency of a given search term helps to indicate the brandability or popularity of the keyword. Generic word domains, such as flowers. com or poker. com are the strongest in their keyword popularity genre.
Traffic and Revenue
Traffic or visitors to a particular domain is one of the most important factors to consider when appraising a domain. More traffic usually means more revenue due to pay-per-click income and possible advertising opportunities, therefore increasing the value of the domain.
Brandability and Trends
Any domain that is easily memorable, short and non-descript is considered brandable and therefore increases it’s value. It would be easier for a person to remember TVrepair. com instead of the longer fix-my-broken-television. com . Not only is the first choice shorter and has better word flow but also there is less of a chance of someone incorrectly typing in the URL. Also keep tuned in to current trends that may seem to increase an otherwise meaningless domain into a treasure. An example is when Apple Computers began to incorporate the letter i into their products descriptions, such as iPhone, iPod and iLife.
Automated Domain Appraisals
This is a tricky one. Although I feel automated domain appraisal systems such as Estibot are helpful in assisting to appraise a domain, I don’t feel they should be the “end all” decision used to obtain a domain’s value. If used more as a reference tool, they can be one of the greatest resources that help determine an appraisal value. Any script/applications can have some bugs, especially ones with complex algorithms as Estibot. Make automated domain appraisals one of the tools to find an appraisal, not the only tool.
Future Potential Interest and Overall Appeal
As time goes by, new words, trends and fads explode onto the scene, and with each new word or trend created, a domain is born. Stay up with current events and become a regular visitor to news aggregate sites, such as Digg and domain industry specific DNHour to stay on the cusp of emerging potential interests.
Backlinks
I like to keep my eye on the number and quality of backlinks to evaluate an domain appraisal. While tons of irrelevant backlinks might negatively effect a domain’s search engine optimization, it can still be a positive thing for a domain names’ value. With more and more domains being “parked”, the links tend to lean towards relevant backlinks and therefore less likely to be bogged down in the SEO nightmare of page rank. And, it’s hard to argue that backlinks don’t increase traffic.
Relevance, Region Specific and other Fuzzy Logic
As said earlier, there is no exact formula to appraise a domain name, and therefore the not-so-exact elements must come into play. An example would be that veteran domainers tend to skew their entire method of appraising when it comes to country specific or region specific domain names. Different factors are incorporated to determine non-English domain word values and domainers across the globe are becoming better in detecting future potential interests in foreign markets. Another example is the continuously growing popularity of “long-string domaining”, or stringing multiple words or keywords to achieve a brandable and memorable domain name. TacoBell has ThinkOutsideTheBun. com and Amazon has the domain BuyABook. com. By definition, these would not be very valuable but that’s when the fuzzy logic creeps in. A domain’s value can be perceived in multiple ways.

The New Me Domain And Potential
As some of you that keep you ear to the ground may be aware that a new country code top level domain for Montenegro has been authorised. Luckily for the country of Montenegro the domain is simply .me. Since it was launched in May 2006 there has been huge interest in purchasing domains and doMEn (the organisation in charge of domain registrations) have experienced the greatest domain rush in the history of the world wide web.
On 11 September 2007, delegation of root name servers was approved by IANA, which established .me. The .me domain became properly active on 24 September 2007 and a “Public Invitation for selection of the Agent for domain registration under the national Internet domain of Montenegro” was posted on 14 November. doMEn d.o.o. was selected as the new registry operator in Montenegro.
Most .me domain names that were purchased were bought as domain hacks in English, and some in Dutch languages. .me has seen its greatest interest among English speaking countries including the United States (71%), the United Kingdom (6%), Canada (4%), and Australia (2%)[15].
One of the most expensive domain sold during the Land Rush period was insure.me that went for an astonishing $68,005. Shortly, this was then followed by the purchase of date.me, which was sold on the premium auction for $70,000. Other notable sales included love.me for $32,500, and hug.me for $20,000.
In Dutch, only verb combinations were popular, as only they made grammatical sense (as in English). E.g., reserveer.me, which can be translated as book.me, and repareer.me, repair.me. Most of the Dutch domains were sold outside the auction during the Go Live phase.
WordPress uses a .me domain, wp.me, as an URL shortener. This, along with Facebook’s fb.me and Yahoo!’s me.me are the only two letter .me domains, for which an exception was granted by doMEn.
Many of the premium domains were reserved such as rate.me or date.me. On 16 July 2008, registration was made available for all .me domains at various registrars. However, some premium domains did slip the net so to speak. For example:

My commercial site choice was my first and last name and very unique at that. Using your name is okay and expected if you’re famous. The fact that I have collected more than 100 screenshots of generic phrases relative to my business that made Google page one is evidence the content, not the domain, is the trick.
Here’s some advice to help you when selecting a new dot COM small business domain name.
First get a list of about 10 domain names that you would like to have. Next, make a list of market related single word terms about what you do and the customer base you service. If your market is localized, consider geographical terms that relate to where you sell or provide services. Spend thirty minutes brainstorming to come up with the initial names and additional lists of single word terms. You may want another list of significant initials.
Next, search for “WhoIs” in Google to find free online services that keep a database of available domain names, and follow the link in the search results. Each database has a search box which allows you to input the domain name and extension. Begin with your first choice and work down the list and keep track of available names for review later. It may not be easy, so try combinations of the key terms as you continue to search, and keep in mind you want a domain name that is easy to spell and remember. By the time you’re done you should have about six or more available names, so take your time and select the best one, and then register the name ASAP.
Advise: The domain name may not be significant for search engine optimization, but the length of your registration can be. My advice is registering domains for 2 years minimum, and 5 to 10 years if that’s in your budget. Search engines consider that the length of your registration reflects your commitment to be online long term, so at today’s rates 5 years is practical and should cost less than $50 USD.
There’s nothing wrong with getting the dot COM domain name you want, and then registering the other major extensions that are available for the same name. If you are highly successful in your online venture, having the other extensions registered in your name prevents others from attempting to take advantage of your reputation by association. In conclusion, the concept that all the good domain names are taken is just not ture. You may not get exactly what you want, but practical options are available with a little research.

How To Easily Transfer A Web Name
If the admin contact’s email address in the WHOIS record is not accurate, then it needs to be updated before anything else. This process can sometimes take a while depending on the account information the registrar of record has in its database. This is a very good reason for initiating a transfer well before it’s due to expire.
Now, if the admin contact approves the transfer request, then the gaining registrar sends a notification to the registry for the domain TLD. The registry checks the status of the domain and tells the gaining registrar if it’s ok to continue or not. In order for a domain name to transfer, it has to be in an ACTIVE status. If the domain is in redemption, inactive – anything other than ACTIVE, it will not transfer. This is important to know because most people transfer a domain name when it’s about to expire or just after it expired. This isn’t good because most registrars will deactivate a domain name shortly after expiration which will automatically block transfer requests. And before you ask, yes, they have every right to do this and they do not have to reactivate your domain name for you until you pay them a renewal fee. So make sure you initiate a transfer early – I recommend at least 14 days in advance, but more if possible. The domain name also needs to be registered with a given registrar for at least 60 days.
This means you cannot purchase a domain name and then transfer it to another registrar of record in less than 60 days. You also can’t transfer a domain name, and then transfer it again within 60 days.
If the domain name is in an ACTIVE state and has been registered for more than 60 days, the registry informs the gaining registrar that the transfer process will continue. The registry then informs the losing registrar that a transfer request has been made for the domain name.
This part can be tricky depending how your current registrar deals with outbound transfer requests. ICANN states that the gaining registrar is the one who carries the burden of proof of authentication. This basically means the gaining registrar is responsible for contacting the correct person (admin contact) and getting their explicit approval for the domain name transfer. The losing registrar does not have this burden, and therefore is not bound to the same specific rules as the gaining registrar. The losing registrar may contact the admin contact, the registrant, an account contact – whoever they deem fit for a domain transfer approval.
The losing registrar has five days to respond to the registry. If the losing registrar does not respond to the registry in 5 days, then the registry automatically assume the transfer was approved by the losing registrar. This means that if the contact who received the losing registrar’s email chose to ignore it the transfer request would be considered approved from the losing registrar.

Selecting Good Domain Web Names
I disagree with the statement made by some website designers that all the good domain names are gone. Search engine optimization, does not depend heavily on the www name you select. For my clients just starting out the decision choosing small business web names has never been a big deal. It is a proven that all the three character and four character web names with the key extensions are taken. Furthermore, I agree that a vast number of choice domain names are no longer available; but, the selection of a suitable domain name for your small business is possible if you remain flexible.
The real value in the name you choose from a search perspective is how easy it is to spell and remember. Of the two types of visitors to your site, the human visitors and search engines, the ability of a person to remember your domain name and spell it correctly to pass it on to others outweighs any SEO value. Search engines are robots and don’t care.
Using words like “best”, or other exaggerated terms in your domain name is thought by some to be a disadvantage and penalized by search engines. Search algorithms change often and likewise that theory, and although you may not be penalized for using such words, consider the reaction of your human visitors. They may not stick around if they feel you boast without the content to back it up. For a serious commercial enterprise, my advice is avoiding adjectives in the domain name all together.
In some cases new clients approach me to redesign an existing website, and it surprises me that some of the basics are forgotton. For example, a commercial enterprise in business for profit should not select a dot ORG domain just because the dot COM was taken. This was the case from a conversation with a client interested in a site makeover. Their ORG version was online for 2 years with little or no backlinks or serious indexing from search engines. The mindset of getting one particular name should be reconsidered especially if it’s your first online business.
Here’s a list of the most desirable domain extensions and the usual purpose of each:
COM – Commercial for profit enterprise
INFO – Information only related website
NET – Companies providing internet services
ORG – Non-profit organizations
Certainly there are many more like BIZ, US, WS, and others which are all reasonable choices, but for your commercial business my recommendation is always acquire a dot COM web name. The client mentioned earlier did not realize a dot ORG was intended for a non-commercial enterprise, and they decided the poor website SEO performance was something that justified getting a new dot COM. We easily found an available www domain using their company initials and one key word about their target market which is medical. Despite my advice that they keep the existing site and simply change the theme, they decided to just let it go when it expired.
